Chiefs To Sign Amani Toomer
After bringing in 3 veteran WR's for a workout yesterday, well 2 veterans and David Terrell. The Chiefs are about to make an offer to Amani Toomer as early as this afternoon. This move would likely come at the expense of struggling receivers Jeff Webb or Devard Darling. My guess is that Webb would be the first to go.
The Chiefs coaching staff were extremely disappointed with the teams WR play in the first few practices after being somewhat content during offseason workouts. The hope is with Toomer in the mix would be to have either Toomer or Mark Bradley step up and be a viable option opposite Dwayne Bowe. This would allow Bobby Engram to play in his natural position which is as the slot receiver.
Don't be surprised if the team tinkers some more with wideouts later on in camp also. You can bet that they will be watching other teams cuts and will be in contact quickly if someone of their liking becomes available. Unlike in previous years, the Chiefs WR's now do have some decent fantasy value because of the new system they are running here. This offense will look pretty similar to a collegiate spread offense at times. Matt Cassel will be in the shotgun and tossing flares left and right this season which will lead to some pretty good stats for players that won't be high on anybodies draft board coming into the season.
**UPDATE**
The deal is done. Chiefs signed Toomer to a 1 year contract with financial terms undisclosed at this time. No word yet on which WR gets the boot in KC if anybody.
